FDA Eyes Air Force Model to Protect Food Supply

Trucking companies that haul food could be subject to stricter security requirements if the Food and Drug Administration uses a risk-management model developed by the Air Force to design rules and recommendations to protect the food supply from tampering and terrorist acts.

The model says food suppliers should require transportation companies to conduct background checks on drivers and other employees, seal containers and match seal numbers with shipping papers.

It also says food retailers should write a requirement that suppliers and transporters practice appropriate security measures into their purchase and shipping contracts.
