Driver School Crisis Debated

Trucking officials are split over whether a funding crisis at some driver training schools could trigger driver shortages, or do little harm to an industry that can put plenty of bodies behind the wheel after a long slump in freight demand.

Some private driver training centers suspended operations last month when a major lender, Student Finance Corp., lost its insurance coverage and stopped making tuition reimbursements. (3-25, p.1).

Some large school chains are owed several million dollars by SFC, industry officials said.
