DOT Warns That GPS Is Subject to Vulnerabilities

A new report by the Department of Transportation concludes that the Global Positioning System is vulnerable to both intentional and unintentional interference, so it recommends that alternative backup systems be put in place.

The “Vulnerability Assessment of the Transportation Infrastructure Relying on the Global Positioning System” was completed Aug. 29 and released Sept. 10.

It cautioned those involved in trucking, rail, air and marine transportation that disruptions ranging from atmospheric conditions to jamming could affect safety, as all modes of transportation increasingly rely on GPS.
