The average national price of diesel fuel fell for a second straight week, dropping 5.6 cents to $3.27 a gallon, the Department of Energy said Tuesday.

The downturn followed last week’s 5-cent drop, which had been the first in three weeks.

Regular gasoline’s average price fell 5.1 cents to $3.017 a gallon following last week’s 4.1-cent decline, making the decline since the start of the year at 9.2 cents.

Diesel’s price is now 84 cents higher than the same week last year and gasoline is 85.2 cents over the same time last year, according to DOE figures.

Oil, meanwhile, closed at below $90 a barrel Tuesday for the first time in six weeks, Bloomberg reported.

Benchmark light sweet crude oil futures closed the trading day on the New York Mercantile Exchange at $89.85 a barrel, Bloomberg said — the first time futures had closed below $90 since Dec. 10.

DOE released its figures on Tuesday this week because of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on Monday.
