The average retail price of U.S. diesel fuel fell 0.6 cent to $2.829 a gallon, the Department of Energy said Monday.

The decline followed two straight increases and was the seventh downturn in the past 11 weeks, according to DOE figures.

Gasoline, meanwhile, fell 2.3 cents to $2.959, as the price continues to recede from a record high of $3.218 in late May. Gas is 2.5 cents over the same week last year.

Diesel rose 3 cents last week and 1.3 cents two weeks ago.

This week’s price is 6.9 cents below the same week last year and just 4.8 cents off the year’s high of $2.877, set on April 16.

Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
