YATTSTOWN, Md. — David Marshall, a driver for J.J. Hunt Trucking, Roanoke Rapids, N.C., shook his head as he was flagged out of the line at a weigh station here on Interstate 270 last week during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual three-day International Roadcheck.

After pulling his rig and empty trailer around the back of the scalehouse to straddle a 60-foot-long pit for a Level I inspection, Marshall grabbed his cellphone and called his boss.

“I’m not going to make it to pick up that load,” he said on the phone. He was on a run to Richmond, Va., after delivering a load to Wind Gap, Pa., earlier in the day.

After checking Marshall’s logbook, driver’s license and medical card, inspectors also looked at his truck’s lights, blinkers, tires, brakes and tailpipes, among other items.

And when it was over, inspectors placed the truck out of service because of bad brakes.

On the first day at this site, inspectors conducted 12 heavy-duty truck inspections, Sgt. Mark Pettyjohn of the Maryland State Police said. Two were found with no violations, three — including Marshall’s — were taken out of service and seven were issued citations for reasons including being overweight or having expired registrations, but allowed to continue on their way.

Overall, this year’s Roadcheck June 7-9 included 9,000 inspectors checking commercial vehicles at 1,000 sites across North America. Statistics from the entire Roadcheck event would be available from CVSA later this summer.
