ummins Inc. has teamed with a Chinese company to build engines for use in Chinese trucks.

Dongfeng Cummins Engine Company, a 50-50 joint venture of Cummins and China’s Dongfeng Motor Co., has begun development of a 13-liter heavy-duty truck engine designed to serve the truck market in that country.

Cummins said the agreement is an expansion of its existing partnership with Dongfeng and that it was the first time it had developed a heavy-duty engine platform outside the United States. It said it was also the first time Dongfeng has worked with an international partner to design a new engine platform.

The electronic engine, which is expected to be ready for production in 2009, will feature a power range from 400 horsepower to 545 hp and is designed to be used in heavy-duty trucks above 80,000 pounds gross weight.

The engine use technology that will make it capable of meeting future emission standards in global heavy-duty markets, Cummins said.
