powerful snowstorm in Colorado has closed an 80-mile stretch of a major highway and trigged rock slides, the Associated Press reported Monday.

Up to 20 inches of snow fell in parts of the state, and authorities closed Interstate 70, the main east-west route across the state, from Denver east to Limon, Colo.

Earlier, several tractor-trailers jackknifed on eastbound I-70 approaching the Eisenhower Tunnel and the American Red Cross on Sunday opened a shelter for stranded travelers, AP reported.

Forecasters predicted 4 feet of snow in some mountain areas by Tuesday.

The storm cut off power to 25,000 homes and businesses in Denver when power lines snapped and transformers failed, AP said.
