Class 8 Truck Sales Down 54% From February 2000

Class 8 heavy-duty truck sales in February fell 20.7% from the same month in 2001 and were 54% lower than February 2000, the month before the market for new trucks began tumbling.

Sales shrank to 8,481 last month, down from 10,699 in February 2001. Year-to-date sales also declined by more than 24%, to 16,740 through February from 22,057 in 2001. During the same period in 2000, sales reached 35,063 — more than 52% higher than in the first two months of this year.

In one ray of hope, some truck and engine makers reported that orders picked up during the last two weeks of February and into March.
