Cardboard Gives Way to Plastic in Produce Logistics

Tough days may be ahead for corrugated cardboard as reusable plastic containers and wireless technology gain popularity in the produce-shipment world, say people who follow packaging and container issues.

IFCO Systems and CHEP, global providers of round-trip transport packaging and logistics services, have introduced to North America in the past three years reusable plastic containers, or RPCs, that have proven popular in Europe.

IFCO, with operational headquarters in Munich, Germany, has hired logistics software integrator Savi Technology, Sunnyvale, Calif., to give RPC users an electronic audit of the conditions faced by the product during the delivery process.
