Canadians Put the Squeeze on Diesel Sulfur

Changes in Canadian environmental clean air policy that would affect the trucking industry have met with cautious support from the Canadian Trucking Alliance.

Canadian Environment Minister David Anderson threw down the gauntlet to the trucking industry in a May 19 speech in Toronto, saying, “Make no mistake, Canada’s air is not clean enough.” He defined clean air as his “No. 1 priority as minister of the environment.”

For trucking, this means getting air standards between the United States and Canada in sync, Anderson said. To accomplish that, he later told participants of a government-industry meeting in Toronto that he wants to bring “sulfur content in diesel fuel [to] 15 parts per million by 2006, down from today’s maximum of 500 ppm.”

That is the same target set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
