Border-Opening Plan Puts Focus on Driver Training

Mexican drivers will finally begin operating big rigs on U.S. highways beginning in January, barring congressional action to prevent the Bush administration from implementing a key provision of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

But as concerns swirl around the safety of Mexican trucks and their drivers, the question arises: Who is training Mexican truck drivers?

Despite the diplomatic efforts that have brought international trucking between Mexico and the United States closer to reality, congressional resistance to opening the border to allow Mexican trucks on U.S. roads is building.
