Intermodal Volume Rises 8.2% in Second Quarter

Ken James/Bloomberg News

Intermodal volume in the second quarter rose 8.2%, an indication the industry is recovering from a harsh winter and a contracted economy, according to the Intermodal Association of North America.

The trade group said shipments totaled 4.17 million. In total, domestic shipments rose 7.6% to 1.63 million while international totaled 2.13 million, a rise of 9.6% on a year-over-year basis. Trailer shipments rose 4.3% to 414,357.

“The second-quarter results were indicative of a rebounding economy and higher than predicted import shipments,” Joni Casey, CEO of IANA, said in a statement.

“It is also probable the harsh winter that resulted in constricted Q1 capacity contributed to the second quarter’s strong growth, by comparison,” Casey said.

The trade group also said the Trans-Canada corridor led the way in corridor growth with a 10.5% quarter over quarter increase on a rise in shipments from eastern Canada to western Canada.
