The tax on diesel and gas in New Hampshire will increase by 4 cents starting July 1, after Gov. Maggie Hassan signed off on a transportation funding bill May 21.
The tax is expected to raise an additional $30 million annually for infrastructure improvements, including resurfacing and reconstruction on highways, secondary roads and bridges.
A widening of Interstate 93 is among the project’s top priorities. “It’s a major trucking route for bringing all goods and services into New Hampshire,” said Bill Boynton, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation. “It really is the economic lifeline.”
It’s the first increase in New Hampshire’s gas tax since 1991, but the state continues to have the lowest gas levy of any state in New England.
