Meridiam, founded in 2005, said it managing $3.5 billion of assets in Europe and the United States. It has invested in 32 projects to date, the Paris-based company said.

LaHood served as transportation secretary for more than four years before he stepped down in June 2013. He was succeeded by Anthony Foxx.

Prior to that, he was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives for 14 years, representing the Peoria, Illinois, area.
