American Trucking Associations and Colorado Motor Carriers Association were among the recipients of the Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay Affiliate Challenge Award.

“With today marking the 44th anniversary of Earth Day, ATA is honored to receive this award from EPA for our work with SmartWay to promote environmental stewardship and awareness throughout the trucking sector,” ATA President Bill Graves said in a statement. “SmartWay continues to be a great example of the government working with private industry toward a common goal.”

ATA received the award for recruiting new partners into the program and promoting the SmartWay brand in industry publications as well as participating in SmartWay educational workshops.

Ryder System Inc. and Penske Truck Leasing also were recognized for policies that reduce truck emissions.

Ryder’s Supply Chain Solutions ranks No. 10 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers. Penske unit Penske Logistics ranks No. 30 on the for-hire TT100.

Ryder was recognized for promoting the program on its website as well as on social media and with customers.

“I commend ATA for its level of commitment, enthusiasm, and creativity in promoting EPA’s SmartWay program and sustainable transportation,” Chris Grundler, director of EPA’s office of transportation and air quality, said in a statement. “ATA’s work in this arena brings us all closer to achieving the shared goals of clean freight and clean air.”

EPA also recognized Penske Truck Leasing, marking the second year in a row Penske has won the award. It received the honor in part for introducing customers to SmartWay and helping them to establish fuel economy and emissions benchmarking.

“It is in our company DNA to not only be good environmental stewards ourselves, but to also aid our customers in identifying, quantifying and implementing sustainable transportation solutions,” Drew Cullen, Penske vice president of fuels and environmental affairs said in a statement.

SmartWay is a partnership between EPA and the freight transportation industry that tests products and develops strategies carriers can use to reduce fuel use and greenhouse-gas emissions.
