BNSF Railway said it will spend $5 billion on improvements to its rail network in 2014, $1 billion more than last year.

The railway said it will spend $2.3 billion on its core network, $1.6 billion on locomotive, freight car and other equipment, and $900 million for intermodal and terminal expansion.

“BNSF’s capital investments are an integral part of making sure our network is well-prepared for the demand for freight rail service in the U.S. and helps ensure the continued integrity and reliability of our network,” Carl Ice, CEO of BNSF, said in a statement.

Much of the capacity expansion is set for infrastructure in the northern corridor, and the company said it will be spending $900 million for expansion and maintenance there.

“Our capital plan continues to focus on improving our ability to meet our customers’ service expectations, increasing our capacity where there is growth and strengthening our railroad to help ensure it remains the safest means of ground transportation for freight,” Ice said.
