PITTSBURGH — Mark McLean Jr. of FedEx Freight was recognized as the nation’s premier truck technician after beating out 128 competitors in the 2013 SuperTech event.
“All of the competitors at this year’s TMC SuperTech competition deserve our congratulations, but none more so than Mark McLean, this year’s grand champion,” American Trucking Associations President Bill Graves said in a statement.
“While a tremendous amount of attention is paid to our industry’s drivers, and our industry’s driver shortage, we must not forget those technicians and mechanics who truly keep our industry rolling. Our industry needs more skilled people like Mark and the 128 other competitors at TMC SuperTech,” he said.
McLean, who was named grand champion Sept. 11, accumulated the highest overall score in the written test and 24 hands-on skills stations that were part of the annual competition held by American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council.
McLean, 24, who works at FedEx Freight’s hub and shop in Newburgh, N.Y., also took first place in the wheel-end and preventive-maintenance inspection skills stations.
FedEx Freight’s contingent of eight technicians swept the top four positions and five of the top 10 places.
FedEx Freight is a subsidiary of Memphis, Tenn.-based FedEx Corp. which ranks No. 2 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
