YRC Proposes Network Consolidations

YRC Freight

YRC Freight has sent the Teamsters union a change-of-operations plan that proposes to close 29 terminals and move freight through other facilities.

The less-than-truckload carrier said Tuesday the proposed changes will be “another step in its efforts to continuously improve customer service, optimize linehaul density and load average, reduce empty miles and reduce shipment handling.”

“By realigning our network, YRC Freight will reduce the number of handling and relay locations in order to build network density,” YRC Freight President Jeff Rogers said in the statement.

The consolidations would also reduce distribution centers by three, according to a YRC letter to the union, dated Monday, that was posted online by Teamsters for a Democratic Union. The letter notes the 29 proposed terminal closures.

A committee made up of union and company leadership will convene a formal hearing next month to consider the proposal, and YRC said it expects to begin implementing the plan in May.

YRC Freight is a unit of YRC Worldwide, which is ranked No. 4 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
