Qualcomm Inc. will change the name of its Qualcomm Enterprise Services division in the spring in conjunction with a corporate reorganization of the business.
The QES division, which provides onboard computers and other technology for the trucking industry, will be known as Omnitracs, a Qualcomm company, once the change takes effect, Qualcomm spokeswoman Olga Walsh said.
The business’ new name comes from the company’s Omnitracs onboard communications system, which helped pioneer the use of commercial vehicle telematics after Qualcomm introduced it in the late 1980s.
The name change will occur for “legal reasons” as Qualcomm transfers QES, which is currently a division of Qualcomm, into a wholly owned subsidiary, Walsh said.
The reorganization is “simply formalizing the way that business has historically operated,” she said.
There will be no changes to QES’ operations or mission, Walsh said. “We will continue working in the same manner.”
