Rep. Duncan Calls for Review of Mexican Trucks Program

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), a longtime critic of the federal pilot program to allow Mexican trucks beyond the border trade zone, has asked the chairman of the House Transportation Committee to conduct an extensive review of the program.

“While I acknowledge the important goals of the U.S.-Mexico Cross Border Trucking Pilot Program, the results have been less than desirable and should be cause for a more thorough review,” he wrote. “Moreover, the program has received little interest from Mexican-based carriers.”

Duncan, a member of the Transportation Committee, said a recent report by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Inspector General showed that, in the 14 months since the program began, only 17 trucks and 20 drivers have been approved to operate on U.S. highways.

He said his primary concern is that a lack of proper DOT oversight poses a “safety risk on American roads.”
