Clean Energy, Covanta to Partner on CNG Stations

Covanta Energy Corp. and Clean Energy Fuels Corp. said they will develop compressed natural gas fueling stations at Covanta locations, beginning this month at Covanta’s Newark, N.J., facility.

The two said they will “will work together to identify Covanta sites on which to construct CNG stations” that will fuel at least 30 trucks per day and will be open to other users.

No financial details were released. Covanta, Morristown, N.J., operates 44 waste-to-energy facilities and 13 trash transfer stations.

“Covanta Energy is pleased to partner with Clean Energy and help in the conversion of refuse trucks to cleaner, more efficient technologies like natural gas-powered vehicles,” said Joey Neuhoff, Covanta’s vice president of business development.

The Newark site generates 65 megawatts of power from processing about 2,800 tons of waste daily. Additional CNG fueling locations are being evaluated, the two companies said in a joint statement.

“For years, Covanta has been an innovative leader in providing clean, renewable energy to the communities they serve,” said Raymond Burke, vice president for solid waste at Clean Energy, Seal Beach, Calif.

Clean Energy is developing what it calls “America’s Natural Gas Highway,” a nationwide network of liquefied natural gas (LNG) stations for heavy-duty trucks.
