FMCSA Orders Illinois Carrier Shut Down

Federal officials have shut down C&D Transportation Inc., Elk Grove Village, Ill., calling it an “imminent hazard to public safety” and saying the carrier ignored a previous shutdown order.

The company “has engaged in and continues to engage in a pattern and practice of blatantly ignoring and/or violating significant provisions” of federal trucking regulations, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said in a shutdown order.

The carrier willfully violated a Nov. 8 out-of-service order by leasing vehicles, one of which crashed Nov. 11 in Pennsylvania, FMCSA alleged.

It also failed to ensure that its drivers carried commercial driver licenses and are proficient in English. It has violated records-of-duty-status and vehicle weight limit regulations multiple times, FMCSA said.

C&D plans to correct the violations FMCSA has alleged, including hiring drivers with commercial driver licenses and who are proficient in English, Leon Yang, the company’s assistant manager, told Transport Topics.

Before it was shut down, C&D operated 15 straight trucks, records show. FMCSA said it would allow the company to resume operations if it takes a number of remedial actions.
