DOT Freight Transportation Index Rises 0.1%

Tom Biery/Trans Pixs

The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index rose 0.1% in September from the same month last year, DOT said Thursday.

The freight TSI rose 0.2% month-to-month from August, to a reading of 109.2, DOT said. The index uses a baseline 100 reading from the year 2000.

The September reading continued a pattern of little change since January, DOT said, as other indicators showed an uptick in economic growth.

Freight shipments are up 1% in the five years from the pre-recession level of September 2007.

The freight TSI is a seasonally adjusted monthly index measuring the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline and local transit.
