Gasoline is now 13.3 cents below the same price last year, DOE said. Before its recent declines, gas had gained a cumulative 71.2 cents in 14 gains in 15 weeks from late December through early April .
Despite its recent downturn, diesel has gained a cumulative 29 cents since its year-low $3.783 price on Jan. 2, rising in 11 of 12 weeks from then through the second week of April.
Each week, DOE surveys about 350 diesel filling stations to compile a national snapshot average price.
