Average Price of Diesel Remains at $1.144

The national average price of diesel fuel remained unchanged at $1.144 per gallon, the Department of Energy reported on Monday.

The price of diesel rose 0.4 cent last week, which was only the third time in the previous 19 weeks it had increased. One year ago, the price stood at $1.52 per gallon.

At the same time, the price of gasoline rose 1.5 cents per gallon to $1.116. Though most commercial trucks use diesel, a significant number burn gasoline. Both fuels are important to the trucking industry.

Gasoline is still 32.7 cents per gallon cheaper than this time last year.

The price of diesel was little changed in five geographical regions the DOE’s Energy Information Administration divides the nation into for reporting purposes.

The East Coast saw the price slipped 0.5 cent a gallon to $1.171, while the price remained steady in the Midwest at $1.119 per gallon.

The largest increase – 1 cent per gallon – was again seen on the West Coast, which includes California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii. The price currently stands at $1.224 per gallon.

The price also rose in the Rocky Mountains and along the Gulf Coast.

The EIA surveys 350 fueling stations in five regions at the start of each week, and usually reports the results on the same day that it polls the stations.
