merican Trucking Associations Thursday named three motor carriers as the winners of its 2005 National Truck Safety Contest.

The companies, representing large, mid-size and small fleets, are Con-Way Western Express, Buena Park, Calif.; A. Duie Pyle Cos., West Chester, Pa.; and Ace Doran Hauling & Rigging Co., Cincinnati.

The winning companies, judged to have the best overall safety programs and records of safety initiatives among the contest entries, will be presented with the ATA President’s Trophy during ATA’s upcoming Management Conference and Exhibition, Oct. 15-18 in Boston.

The award, sponsored by Great West Casualty Co., recognizes fleets with the highest records of safe operation and the best programs to promote safety throughout the trucking industry and among all highway users and the general public.

Ace Doran Hauling & Rigging, a flatbed carrier representing carriers with less than 25 million operating miles annually, has 400 line-haul drivers in its nationwide operating area. It said it employs a deliberate and aggressive campaign to elevate the entire company attitude regarding safety, and its goal is to “breathe safety.”

A. Duie Pyle Co., a less-than-truckload carrier hauling general commodities in the 25 million to 100 million operating miles annually category, has made its safety commitment through an aggressive in-house training campaign. Every employee is taught that without safety, there is no service.

Representing carriers with more than 100 million annual operating miles, LTL carrier Con-Way Western Express makes safety its top priority for its drivers, customers, and the public. Supervisors hold regularly scheduled meetings to follow up on initial training, introduce new or updated material, and promote safety. Con-Way also has instituted safety committees at each location, where they must hold safety meetings once a month.

Con-Way is a unit of CNF Inc., No. 6 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
