merican Trucking Associations said Friday that its board of directors has revised ATA’s alternative fuels policy to advocate the use of biodiesel fuel in blends up to 5% as part of the national diesel fuel standard.

ATA said the new policy is part of its effort to combat rising fuel prices and help shape a comprehensive national energy plan.

The group’s board on Wednesday endorsed an energy resolution calling for increased diesel fuel supply, and eliminating “boutique” diesel fuels, among other things. (Click here for previous coverage.)

“We need to look at all options for extending the supply of diesel fuel,” said ATA President Bill Graves. “Biodiesel represents an important part of a long-term energy plan designed to increase the nation’s fuel supply and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.”

ATA’s energy policy calls for a single national diesel fuel. Biodiesel meeting the accepted quality standard and blended with petroleum-based diesel in amounts up to 5% works in any diesel engine, the group said.

As the U.S. transitions to ultra low sulfur diesel fuel in 2006, use of biodiesel will help ensure that ULSD maintains adequate lubrication, the group said.
